For several hundred years Brno used to be an important and innovative leader in the field of textile industry sometimes called Moravian Manchester, it also has very long and outstanding tradition of engineering industry with traditional companies like Zbrojovka or Zetor.
This development was always accompanied with fast implementation of newest technologies, which continues till today. Brno is a home city of technological parks, research science and development centres and of course universities. It is virtually a city of students as they create approx. 20 per cent of its inhabitants. Following the tradition of industry and science Brno University of Technology – VUT Brno was founded in 1899 as the second oldest and largest technical university in the Czech Republic.
It consists of 8 faculties, including the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the largest mechanical engineering faculty in the Czech Republic with 4 200 students, 520 employees, 15 institutes and own R&D centre NETME that makes the faculty the respectable partner for industry and research institutions.
NETME or New Technologies for Mechanical Engineering is a research centre based on high quality research and development of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Brno University of Technology. The major strength of the Centre lies in its capability to organize a multidisciplinary research teams and subjects of over five hundred Faculty members. Hence, the Centre has quickly established itself as a modern and collaborative applied research R&D centre.
Main research areas are: SPIL, power, processes and environmental engineering, aircraft and automotive technology, mechatronics, virtual machine design and testing, advanced metal materials. NETME cooperates with leading universities and companies all over the world, 40 per cent of contracted research is from international companies.
The SPIL project guided by an international research team, supervised by Professor Jiří Klemeš, has been established at the NETME Centre. The SPIL project has been drafted and developed at the NETME Centre and subsidized from the Operational Program Research, Development and Education. The project commenced on 1 February 2017, and will last five years. The project objective is to establish an international, competitive research facility, and to simultaneously provide both unique and practical knowledge which will promote an increase in efficiency of processes and power industries, in other words knowledge that will help minimize the so-called greenhouse, nitrogen, ecological and water footprints.
